Boxers are great family dogs, gentle with children, loving, and attention seekers.
Chichesters are a mix of wacky and wild, burrowing snugglers who can be a bit busy and feisty.Unknownnoreply@blogger.comBlogger106125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29959843.post-59286762521502643262017-10-16T06:00:00.000-07:002024-02-10T13:03:31.068-08:00Bringing Home a Tiny PuppySo, in August of 2016 we brought home a teeny, tiny little puppy. The hubby chose his name, "Cruiser" (which is one ONE of the things we call him, lol). Cruiser was chosen as a name as the hubb is a Toyota Land Cruiser lover, he has rebuilt several over the years, into slow riding, Rubicon crawling machines.

So, at Cruiser's first vet visit he was only 4 oz., it was weird. I've always had big dogs, so even as puppies they came home a decent size. Bringing home a tiny puppy opens a whole new level of WTF moments...

A small breed puppy can fit into so many more itty bitty crevices. They can fit under the fence in the back yard. When in the back yard you actually worry they'll be swooped up by some sort of predator bird. They can squeeze under the tiny space under the couch. They can (and will) find the itty bittiest of weird things to eat in the house and yard. They can fall off the bed which is SO much farther down than for a baby Boxer. They get under your feet, they WILL get under your feet, and are MUCH more delicate if you accidentally step on them. They are faster, and more aerodynamic when attempting to catch them at a full speed run... (they can fit under tables and chairs so much easier, lol)

Seriously, cute or what? Sleeping in the smllest size dog bed
you can get. (this is a couple days after we got him)

In addition to all that, I simply forgot just HOW exhausting a puppy is to have. Not to mention, I'd say it was even MORE exhausting to bring a tiny puppy home.

You see they have to pee a LOT more than a bigger dog. Their bladder is quite tiny, so they cannot hold it as long. No such thing as a full night of sleep. I was literally up every two hours taking the puppy outside. I was cranky, grumpy, tired and all the other dwarfs too. The only thing that saved this puppy was the fact he was so dang cute (kidding)...

Then, after needing to get up every two hours, he'd be WIDE awake at about 5-6 am, and want to play, play, PLAY. I'd go out on the couch where he had a safe room to play, and I'd (try) to get in a few more winks before starting the day. Holy cow. Do NOT get a small breed dog if you are not patient!

You have to take them out, a LOT. Because they can pee SO fast, and you won't even know it, unless you actually step on it. A micro pee smaller than a quarter. You have to watch for the telltale signs of a pending potty. You have to watch them like a hawk! I can seriously see why people with small dogs have piss all over their house (it's simply lack of diligence and proper training).

After the puppy phase passes, the reward is sSO great, this little dog is my heart. I never thought I could bond with a tiny, pointy eared dog, with such a little body. I mean, how could I love such a little thing? I could not go up and thump him like I do with Bodhi, I could not grab him in a human sized bear hug. However, I soon learned I could and would love this dog at a level I'd never knew existed. I don't love him more, just different. He dives under the covers, snuggles at my belly, rests his chin across my neck. He exudes SO much love. I. Can't. Even.

He twirls, jumps into my arms and is nothing but pure love. He proves, love comes in all sizes. He came into my life at just the perfect moment. I NEEDED him, and I am so grateful the Universe blessed me with his petite little self.

*sigh* my little Cruiser, he just makes me, happy <3 br="">
Oh the stories I have to share, stay tuned!

</3>
After Astrid passed away, I shied away from blogging for a bit. We do have a new furry friend, Cruiser, who joined the family shortly after Astrid's passing. It has been quite an adventure bringing a new dog into the house. Today I will share some photos of the two over the past year, soon I'll start sharing the adventures of bringing up a brand new, small breed puppy with a 90 pound adult Boxer!

Firstly, Bodhi has never been the same since Astrid's passing. He seems to be in a permanent low level depression. He did get to see her after she passed, so we hope he understands why she's gone. I always knew, if she went first, that he'd have a difficult time, as dear Astrid, was the love of his life... I still our sweet Astrid's 'box' and it brings me to tears, so I understand his pain.

However, Cruiser has definitely brought some light into our world. They are always snuggling, so I know that Bodhi enjoys the companionship. I do think Bodhi would be much sadder without the little turd keeping him stimulated all the time. Granted, Cruiser does sometimes seem to drive Bodhi a little bonkers. For instance when Bodhi wants to lay down, and Cruiser is running in circles around him trying to get him to play...LOL After awhile Bodhi usually caves in and starts playing =)

It really is sweet to see them together all the time though, it puts warm fuzzies in my heart.

We've always had big dogs (50 pounds or larger) so it was quite an adjustment adding a small dog into the mix. Now, a year later, Cruiser has topped out at about 10 pounds or so. He is about 1/10th the size of Bodhi, it is quite impressive to see the two of them play. Bodhi is a gentle giant, and Cruiser sure knows how to rile him up!

I cannot imagine my world without dogs in it. They bring such a pure love into your life. They do not judge. They simply love. A dog is love. Pure love.
For the most part Bodhi seems okay. He has had a few moments of looking a bit sad. His ears perked up a bit when he heard us mention Astrid's name, and he seemed to look around for her hoping she had returned. However, we think he knew she was dying before we did.

this picture was taken a few weeks before Astrid's passing.
Just being his typical beg hog self...

As I noted in a previous blog, I found Bodhi standing over Astrid quietly, then laying down next to her. I felt he knew that her time was near,

The day she passed I made sure that he came over to see her so he could have closure. I did not want him to see her leave and not understand that she was 'gone'. After he spent a moment with her, he pretty much vanished and stayed clear.

The next day he was quiet, and seemed lonely. Before her passing, the two were peas in a pod, always traveling around the house together, barking at stuff together, begging together, going potty together in the yard, etc...etc..He followed her like she was Queen.

I used to always joke if Bodhi went first Astrid would be fine with it, but if Astrid went first that Bodhi would be devastated.

Astrid was definitely the Alpha around here (ranking just under me of course) - but now Bodhi seems to be stepping into her role a bit in a subtle way. i.e. taking her spot on the bed and no longer waiting to eat (he used to wait until she had her food before he ate)

Overall I think he's doing pretty good, like all of us, I think he has his moments...
In the days after, you realize even more how much you miss even the most annoying, crazy things your Boxer would do.

I miss having to run around the for ten minutes, while running late, looking for it.

I miss her little old lady dragon breath, wafting at me while eating my dinner.

I miss her loud and high pitch bark when she felt she was not the center of attention.

I miss getting up off the couch only to find she had stolen the warm spot.

I miss finding her waiting for me at the garage door when I'd come home - with her nub wagging so fiercely that she could not walk in a straight line.

I miss her always, ALWAYS grabbing a toy, shoe, blanket, pillow ANYTHING she could get her teeth on, to present a gift when I walked through the door.

I miss her hogging the bed (Bodhi is starting to settle into her spot now and he too is a magnificent bed hog)

I miss her claw footed stretch into my back.

I miss her 'rabbit kick' as she got comfy.

I miss seeing her 'spoon' with hubby under the covers with her head out and a big smile on her face...

While I miss so many things, I also feel blessed that I have the memory of these and many more things that made her so special in our lives.

That evening when I got home Astrid was breathing very heavily; her eyes looked confused, tired and frightened. I felt in my heart it was time soon. I asked her if she was thirsty, and her eyes said 'yes' (she always had a way of opening her eyes to say 'yes' for potty/kibbles/water). So I brought a little bowl, she could not raise her head to drink, so I gave her water via a dropper - and she drank.

I got a pillow and laid with her, I told her she was a beautiful girl. I told her she was a good girl. I thanked her for sharing so many fun times with us over the past nine years. I told her it was okay, it was okay to go. I stroked her face, played with her ears an looked into her eyes. I was laying right next to her, just being 'with' her.

Her breathing was deep and heavy, it seemed as if she just could not get enough air. From what I had read, her body was shutting down. The organs were no longer running at 100%, this is why she was not able to walk without wobbling, stand for very long, and why she did not want any food. She was preparing to go.

It was very difficult, all kinds of things were running through my brain.

"Does she want me here?"
"Would she rather be alone?"

I just did not know... I had heard animals usually go to a secluded spot to pass away, but it was so difficult for me to leave her alone - her eyes looked so scared...

She had a vet appointment at 9:15 the next morning, so I decided I'd bring her into bed like the night before. I made a big comfy nest in the middle of the bed with her favorite blankets. Preparing for a nice evening snuggle.

Then I asked her if she needed to go potty, her eyes desperately said "yes!" So I picked her up and gently set her outside. Making sure she was stable, she stood on wobbly feet, and walked over and peed. But she did not squat, for the first time ever. She peed fully standing up, and it made my heart jump.

After peeing, she walked forward and sideways at the same time. She then collapsed to the ground. Her head was still up, so I figured she just ran out of energy. I ran inside to get my shoes so I could bring her in to her nest of blankets on the bed.

A couple seconds later I was walking toward her and I saw her head lay down. Then I heard it, the very deep, long inhale - followed buy a long and thorough exhale. Then silence. I knew. It had just happened.

I knelt beside her and gently called her name, she was gone. I laid my hands on her side and I could feel the warmth of her body, and a quiet vibration within. Her engine was winding down. Her little head did a couple twitches. I could not hear anything, it was totally quiet around me, the world, in that moment, was totally void of sound. The motion light had gone out, and it was just us alone, under the starry night sky in that moment. I could only hear the sound of blossoms dropping off the tree above us. It seemed like hours in that silence...

I had a mild bout of panic, I didn't know what to do. I knew she may evacuate her bowls. I knew that rigamortis would at some point set in.

I called the vet, it was after 10 PM, I got the after hours service. I was hoping to get the on call doctor to tell me what to do. They referred me to the ER. The same ER that we had just taken her to a month before. They kept me waiting for what seemed like an eternity...

I took the nest of blankets off the bed and folded them into a comfy square in the living room, and I prepared myself to go outside to get Astrid. I had lifted her hundreds of times, in my head I thought it would be similar - except this time with no wiggles or kisses.

I knelt down beside her, petting her gently, she was still warm and soft... Several flowers had fallen off the tree onto her and around her. It was peaceful and beautiful...

I was ready, I slid my hands under her to pick her up, and I walked half way across the yard and collapsed. Her lifeless body shocked me. I kneeled over her, sobbing.

I was not expecting her lifeless body to be so absent. The energy was gone. The life force had vanished, Her soul had moved on. After having a moment of awakening, I knew I had the strength to continue.

I lifted her once again and carried her inside, I lay her down on her folded nest of her favorite blankets. I moved her so she looked like she was just taking a cozy nap. I laid with her. I kissed her. I talked to her. I said goodbye.

Our sweet Astrid is now a fur angel, she has crossed the rainbow bridge and is now romping in forever green grasses - with delicious treats and tons of shoes and socks to steal.

We love you our sweet princess puppy, until we meet again...
Just a week or so ago Astrid started acting a little strange. We were having a heat wave here in Northern California, and both the Boxer duo were hot pups. However, Astrid was being a little more lethargic than her normal napping self, and was protesting food a bit, Now we already know Astrid had a habit of protesting dog food when getting human food the day before - so we were thinking she was pulling rank and trying to get us to give her treats or human food.

However this time, something was different....

She would not even eat a treat. She would not even eat human food. She appeared to have lost a little weight.

Note: the average age for a Boxer is 10 to 11 years old, Astrid was 12-14 or so (she was a rescue so we never knew her exact age). Due to this fact I looked up the signs of a dying dog. Never something anyone has to look up but for some reason I felt I needed to look it up. It makes my heart hurt even thinking about it....

However, as I read the list, Astrid met nearly all the criteria....

Extreme fatigue

Loss of appetite

Vomiting

Lack of coordination

Labored breathing

Confusion

Incontinence

In the beginning of this she was tired, but almost herself aside from that and protesting food a bit. However over the course of just a week, Astrid was so very tired, she would get up to drink, pee, then lay back down again. No playing, no barking at people out the window. No begging. No stealing shoes. No stealing the warm spot on the couch.

I took her to the vet, I had to carry her in. At this time she would only stand for a moment then lay down. She had no interest in the puppy treats on the counter. No interest in the barking dogs. No interest in the faint meows. Barely a nub wiggle when the vet walked in.

I asked with tears in my eyes if she was dying...at this time Astrid's breathing was getting shallow and quick - like after a hard romp around the yard, but while she was at complete rest. The doctor said it was possibly the case, but wanted to inject her with fluids and some medication and see how she did. The doctor also recommended a bunch of other tests (all of which were just done a few weeks earlier at the ER) as the doctor said things can change rapidly in that short amount of time. Depending how the treatment went, we would revisit it after a follow up. But,she also said it might be time to consider other options...

We went home and Astrid walked into my home office to lay down. I covered her up as per the vet her temperature was a bit low.

Later I checked on her and Bodhi was in the room with her, just standing by her, looking at her. He knew. I know he knew. He laid next to her and stayed by her side.

We brought Astrid up onto our bed and let her snuggle with us for the night as usual. Her breathing was very loud, it had me concerned. I wanted her near us. She slept through the night...

The next morning I had to head to San Francisco for work. Bodhi was snuggled up against her, she stood up and indicated she had to go potty, so I took her out side (carried her as she would not walk to the door). She peed then made it back inside, where she laid down.

I was distraught over leaving, so worried for her... but I had to go. My daughter's boyfriend gave me an update later that afternoon - he checked on her and had taken her potty, she drank some water, and he was keeping her company. This put me at ease and I finished my day.

We found them by accident when at a trip to the ER vet for Astrid. We were charged an enormous amount of money for a small bag, however it was worth it. Astrid took the pills with NO problem!

I used to have to attempt to hide pills in peanut butter or wrap them in lunch meat, where her clever self would eat the treat and spit out the pill...

These thing are amazing, little treats with a hole in the middle, soft like play doh, you pop in the pill and shape the treat around the pill. It is swallowed in one gulp. Seriously if it's that good I don't know why dogs don't CHEW it to taste it, but regardless it works.

If you have a pill popping pup, give these a try!

(I am not sure how healthy (or not) they are -but they relieve owner stress that's for sure!)

Enter Murphy's Law, on Saturday her entire neck and half of her face were completely swollen (my apology for no pictures - imagine if Quasi Moto looked like a Boxer Dog). We called our vet and spoke with the on call doctor who thought it may be a foxtail that worked its way in - and suggest a trip to ER to get some antibiotics.

Five hours of sitting and waiting, sitting and waiting, sitting and waiting - we were perhaps persuaded in our weakened state of mind (tired, starving, worried) to run a full panel of tests plus xrays - sending us home with pills for the pup.... Only to find out a week later they did the tests incorrectly and the xrays showed nothing.

However, no refunds from the ER. It was quite frustrating...

The swelling went down after a matter of days, and all was back to normal. I did take her to our vet and they let her continue on her medicine to fight off infection as they too ran some tests and found some cells indicating infection. Our vet agreed with the on call vet, that it likely was a foxtail. The doctor felt bad about the huge ER bill...

On the bright side, it all cleared up and Astrid was back to normal.

I honestly don't know if the trip to the ER was warranted... I really think we were taken advantage of in this particular situation. Even at the last minute they show these amazing things called 'pill pockets' and how Astrid snarfed down a HUGE pill without batting an eyelash. They asked if wanted some, of course we did! Later to find out that they added $15 to the bill (later I found a package twice as big for half the price).... (((sigh))

But, Astrid was happily herself once again!

Alethea Anderson
The Boxer Blogger

Have you hugged your Boxer(s) today?

I'm doing a little catch up - so there will be a few posts in a row (that really span over a period of several months). I wanted to share some info that may be useful to other Boxer lovers...

A couple years ago Astrid had surgery to have some lumps and bumps removed here and there, every once and awhile the scar on top of her head would look a little irritated - but always cleared up in a day or two.

Well this time we noticed a couple sore spots here and there, then BOOM, overnight she was covered with scabby little sores the size of a dime all over head to toe...

Off to the vet we went...

After a few swab tests, cultures, and hefty vet bills - it turned out she had a bacterial infection. We were told it was a common bacteria that is always present on dogs, All it takes is one little infected hair follicle to cause a full blown skin disaster! :(

The vet said the sores start small under the fur and often go unnoticed until they all break through - which is why it seemed overnight that she was covered head to toe.

We had to give Astrid special baths with a prescription shampoo, and let the shampoo sit for over 10 minutes on the skin. (Try standing in a single stall shower with a wiggly Boxer dog, multiple times over the course of a week....)

Plus she got a prescription of antibiotics...

Follow up vet visit, they were questioning the diagnostic and possibly going to refer her to a skin specialist. Literally a doggy dermatologist! Thankfully this did not need to take place - whew... a new antibiotic and a couple weeks later, the infection cleared up.

However Astrid is left with black scars ranging between dime and quarter size all over. We think it was all a ploy to become a dalmatian...

Alethea Anderson
The Boxer Blogger

Have you hugged your Boxer(s) today?Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29959843.post-73739080596508374322015-04-15T12:15:00.002-07:002015-04-15T12:15:25.129-07:00Boxer Refuses to Eat, does Astrid only want Treats?

This mystery has been happening for years, yet still baffles me. Sometimes Astrid simply refuses to eat her breakfast. She'll sit by her bowl to ensure Bodhi does not eat it, however she won't. She'll sit there guarding the bowl, until, I put it on the counter (so Bodhi does not get it) and then she'll go about her business.

Usually on days like this, her tummy will growl all day, and she will refuse all foods. She may much a few greens from the yard, which makes me wonder if she has an upset tummy, then by evening, she's ready for a meal and seems to want her breakfast AND dinner all at once!

She is doing this, once again, today. It really drives me bonkers, she's here by my feet at my desk - and her tummy is making those squishy, squeaky sounds... I feel for her, I don't want her to be hungry! I'll ask her if she wants kibbles, and she will hop, leap and bound into the kitchen - only to NOT eat! However, if I were to offer her a chicken jerky, she'd take it...

Which always makes me think of the night before, and who in this house may have been giving her an extra dose of people food... which makes me realize she often boycotts her dog noms the day after receiving significant hoooman foodies....

SO I am really starting to think it's not that she's not hungry, it's that she is holding out for a treat vs her dog food. Perhaps she is trying to guilt me into feeding her a treat, with her pitiful growling little tummy.

Hmmmm, sneaky Boxer...
Dogs, like humans, can indeed get sunburned! Their skin is sensitive like ours, so do keep an eye on your favorite fido if they are sun worshipers. Especially if they have areas of thinner hair, light fur or pink skin... (boxer ears and tummies may need special attention)

How to keep your fur babies safe from the sun...

Use dog safe sunscreen (yes they have it, ask your vet) test to prevent irritation.

Monitor their sunshine hours (worst between 11 and 4)

Make sure they have shade (and water) if they're out all day.

There are also pet clothing alternatives that can help too.

A couple weeks ago on a Friday I was not feeling 100%... I stayed in bed all day and remembered I was almost out of dog food. The very last thing I wanted to do was get in my car and go to Pet Food Express to get a 30 pound bag of dog food...

So I went to Google and searched for local dog food delivery, and found wag.com (if you visit please use code ALET0624 and I'll get a $5 credit, Bodhi and Astrid thank you!) I checked to see if they have my brand of dog food, Taste of the Wild Pacific Salmon, and they sure did!

It was better when I found the price on my brand of dog food was lower than Pet Food Express... Even better, next day delivery (on a Saturday). EVEN BETTER, free delivery if I signed up for auto ship! I pondered it for a few (not a big fan of auto ships) however I decided that if I could have Astrid and Bodhi's food delivered to my front door on the same schedule that I'd drive across town, in city traffic to get their food. Well, WIN WIN situation!

So with the onsite coupon and auto ship, I got a 30 pound bag of dog food plus a bag of treats with FREE shipping for about $10 less than I would have paid for ONLY bag of dog food at Pet Food Express (not counting the fuel I'd use and time spent to go there).

In addition, you can shop across multiple sites and get great discounts on other types of goodies too, bath goodies, food goodies... I've not explored them all as I was under the weather, placed and order, and went back to bed, but I wanted to share so maybe some fellow Boxer lovers can find great deals on great dog food and other things as well!

I got my order, as promised, on Saturday via FedEx! Perhaps the only time the Boxer Duo was excited for a delivery box coming into the home because they KNEW it was their noms! LOL

This is an unsolicited review of wag.com, if you visit their website and place and order, please use my referral code of ALET0624 to give me a $5 credit toward future purchases {hugs}.
I was so mortified and disgusted I was ready to do nearly ANYTHING. Seriously, like MOVE.

I called the vet and said I was ready for whatever they had, and they recommended Comfortis. I was really concerned with basically feeding my dog some sort of toxin that was going to kill fleas when they bit the dog...

She explained to me that the chemical compound used in Comfortis was discovered in a jungle. Scientists were doing research and noticed that there were certain areas within the jungle that had NO bugs at all. They found this fascinating and discovered that all these areas had one thing in common, a certain plant.

So, this plant is the basis for the flea treatment Comfortis. Now I'm not sure how accurate this is, it's just what I was told, but it sure made me feel better. LOL. I KNOW many 'drugs' are derived from nature, and are not SAFE. But,as I mentioned above, I was ready for ANYthing that was going to work.

So I bought one dose for each, Astrid and Bodhi. It was $31.50 for two pills (discounts for larger quantities of course) but I wanted to see how it worked! Since the Boxers are about 30 pounds different in weight, they each had different dose pills.

The pills look just like the ones in the picture, the dogs LOVE them, like they are special treats! So if you get Comfortis to help with your Boxer flea problem, and if you get multiple doses, do NOT keep the extras where the Boxers can find them. They'll eat them for a snack and get VERY sick if they overdose!

Basically you give your Boxer the Comfortis flea pill once a month, it does its magic and when fleas jump on the dog and bite the dog to feed, that flea is going to be dead soon after. I used to 'catch' fleas and wash them down the sink, now I find dead fleas on the Boxers. I am not finding any more 'flea dirt' (blood excrement from adult fleas feeding which is then consumed by flea hatchlings) which shows me that it is working. In addition I see very FEW live fleas around. Still some, but I know the process takes time.

The Comfortis helps to stop the cycle of fleas, they are killing the adults, and also the newly hatched fleas before they have a chance to lay eggs. You STILL have to keep up on vacuuming. Every (EVERY) single day. Remember that flea eggs can lay dormant and hatch when weather is prime. I'm keeping the Boxer Duo on these pills as here in California we're still in a drought. It was 72 yesterday and I swear that a new batch of fleas hatched. OMG. It has been a couple months that they've been on Comfortis and I plan to keep them on it through this year as we are still in an extremely dry drought with warm weather headed our way.

It's a battle, but we're WINNING!
Well no sooner did we take the cone off his head, he started right in on his arm trying to pull the stitches out. He was literally trying to RIP them out of his skin....

So I did a little Google research and decided to take the stitches out of ONLY his arm (none of the other places). I read that you snip only ONE side near the knot, so you can pull the entire stitch out using the know. If you cut the knot off, you can actually lose the stitch in the wound!

So, with the help of my daughter, I snipped and pulled the oh-so-pretty hot pink stitches out of his arm. I saved them in a zip bag to show the vet so they knew what I did, lol...

As soon as they were out, he did not mess with his arm the rest of the day! I guess they were pretty bothersome... So I did it, yay me! Too bad I could not send a bill to the vet for my services :)
PS I'm not condoning removing stitches yourself or suggesting you remove stitches yourself. I'm sharing a story of something I felt I needed to do on a holiday when the vet was closed...Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29959843.post-58371850018498980782014-12-12T15:33:00.000-08:002015-02-01T15:51:23.688-08:00Astrid and Bodhi, Two-fer Surgery DayBoth Astrid and Bodhi went in for surgery and teeth cleaning today... They were quite excited to go on a car ride together! Bodhi is so much calmer when Astrid is with him in the car, he actually relaxed and laid down in the back...

Once we got there I did a quick sweep to ensure there were no dogs or cats in the front office, these two are a tough bunch to handle around other critters...

So I brought them in, Astrid was down to 56.7 and Bodhi down to 88.3, my little diet was working for them! (someone who shall remain nameless tends to give them a lot of hooman food, I've been working on making them stop!)

Astrid got a teeth cleaning, extraction of a few teeth, a couple lumps removed, some skin tags tied off and a nail trim.

Bodhi got a teeth cleaning, where they found he had never lost his puppy canines, so they pulled those, and he had some bigger lumps removed.

When I went to pick them up they were still all doped up, they appeared to have no idea I was even in the room. Eyes glossed over, looking loopy and stoned, poor sweeties...

They both looked like frank-n-boxers... they each had several squares shaved out of their fur with big stitches. So they looked kind of like patch work quilts :(

Grand total, $1604.50... however I remember that they said a 10% discount if I brought both at the same time, voila $1444.10. Still a chunk of change, but hey, what can you do?

Astird did great, even with teeth pulled she was eating that night! Bodhi did great too, however he was messing with his stitches on his front leg, so he ended up having to wear a cone! (he took to it quickly due to having to wear one so frequently in the past due to his prior foot issues)
I love them, I use them, they have uses for so, so many things. So I thought there surely MUST be essential oils that will either deter or kill fleas, right?

So I did some research online and found several essential oils known to deter fleas (essential oils will not KILL fleas) however they help in keeping the fleas OFF of your Boxer.

Now Boxers are super duper sensitive, i.e. orange essential oil makes Bodhi break out in hives... So you have to be extremely careful when using any pure essential oils on your Boxers... Do your research, be careful, and be safe. Some essential oils, even though they smell fantastic, and some even smell yummy, can be TOXIC to your favorite fur ball!

So I blended a few oils with some purified water to make a mist and sprayed it into the fur, it definitely kept fleas OFF the Boxers - temporarily... Since I used only water, it and the essential oils, evaporated, and the fleas came back...

I chose not to use a thicker carrier oil (this would help the essential oils adhere to the fur).... as I was working fast and had limited ingredients on hand.

Since it was a short term fix, I used the mist on my bedding (sheets, covers, etc...), on their bedding, on places they sleep, etc... as a deterrent (and a great smelling air freshener!)

I also made a larger size to spray the yard (the vet told me that any creature walking through the yard can be the cause of the fleas, opossum, squirrel, mouse, rat, deer, raccoon, etc..etc...) So I wanted to make the yard a place fleas did NOT want to be by overloading it with natural fragrance essence. (Careful around plants! I used my mist ONLY on dirt and concrete!)

You can purchase several all natural, essential oil based flea treatments at your local pet stores. They are pretty pricey, about $15 for 3-5 oz or so. But if you don't have essential oils on hand, that is much less than purchasing essential oils which can range from $10 to $40 for 5 to 10ml!

In a nutshell, do your research and don't expect any essential oils to remove the fleas from your dog or home, but they are a great way to help keep fleas off the dog :)
From my research I found that you are to get the FOOD GRADE version, this is non-toxic (evidently you can actually EAT it with no harm).

My tip to you, find this at your local pet feed store (where people buy food for livestock, chickens, etc...) I got a HUGE bag for $5, so don't get ripped off!

What is Diatomaceous Earth? Evidently it is a type of dirt/dust composed of ancient teeny tiny organism skeletons. These little skeletons are super sharp and basically cut up adult fleas, causing them to dehydrate and die.

Have you ever seen pictures of video clips of animals rolling in the dust? Basically they know in nature what to do to rid themselves of pests...

So you're supposed to sprinkle this stuff all over your carpet, furniture, etc... then brush it into the fibers to do their trick. Leaving it there for as long as possible.

Please, allow me to share my experience....

So, I purchased my huge bag, I was SO excited that I found a natural cure to get rid of these fricken FLEAS! First I took the dogs outside and gave them a dry dust bath of the Diatomaceous Earth. I rubbed it into their fur from head to toe. They looked dusty and dirty, but I was thinking "HA BYE FLEAS"!

About the Diatomaceous Earth, when you touch it, it is super fine, it feels like confectioner sugar, very fine and fluffy. But don't let it fool you! Let me explain... Have you ever caught a flea and attempted to squish it between your fingers? You squish, rub and squash and you're SURE you've gotten the little sucker. Only to open your fingertips to see him grin at you and hop away?

Well when your fingers are covered in Diatomaceous Earth, if you catch a flea and squash and rub, it literally cuts the flea in half leaving a bloody little dead flea body. So though this dusty dirt feels soft, I then understood how the tiny little ancient skeletons must do their job! So DON'T GET IT IN YOUR EYES!

After intentionally covering my dogs in dirt, I then proceeded to vacuum the house and started sprinkling the Diatomaceous Earth everywhere, every square inch... I put on all the carpet, under the couch kitchens, etc... (I did not use it on the hard floors, I mopped and sterilized them but opted not to dust them).

After I sprinkled, I went back with a broom, to sweep and tap the dust down into the carpet fibers. After finishing the living room I could really smell dirt, you know the dusty, dirt smell? I literally covered my floors in dirt. Once in the dining room I looked back, the sun filtering through the blinds revealed that I had completely filled the room with dust too, I was standing in a dirt cloud...

After panicking and running to Google to see if this dirt was going to get into my reef tank and kill all the coral and tropical fish (it won't all was good) I proceeded to intentionally fill my home with dirt...

The whole time I was thinking how great this was going to be...

The websites all said to give it time to let the fleas run over the Diatomaceous Earth, and to get sliced up and dehydrate. Note: this supposedly only works on ADULT fleas, not the younger, smaller ones...

Several hours later, the dust had settled, on everything, in the home. Every surface, horizontal AND vertical, was COVERED in a layer of Diatomaceous Earth...

I told everyone in the house to not touch it, leave it there, suck it up and deal with it for a few days...

That night, I saw fleas running across the dogs, it was like it attracted MORE fleas ON to the dogs. I had read so many blogs online saying "the fleas were gone within hours". BS. BS. BS.

Three days in, I vacuumed... Holy horror, more dust clouds... it took a few weeks of daily vacuuming to finally get it all OUT of the carpet. Did it help the fleas? NO. Perhaps it worked for others, perhaps I was not patient enough living in a dust pit for all the multi-generations of fleas to hatch, grow big enough to dehydrate and die.

So, on to the next plan...

Back in the day we lived in an apartment, we had three cats, who at one point had no fleas. That was until a neighboring apartment bombed their apartment, forcing the fleas to invade our 680 square foot palace. Flea collars, carpet powder, flea spray - nothing worked... Then we'd bomb, they'd go, and it was a bomb war. Back and forth fleas, horrid, eww, grosss...

Now none of us (we nor our neighbors) ever addressed this flea issue with the apartment management because we ALL snuck cats into a no pet apartment complex, so... well yea...

As I re-read that I'm like, I had THREE cats in 680 square feet? WTF? Good gawd, that was another era...

Anyways... we moved into our first house and before we moved in, we took the cats, much to their displeasure, to have them flea dipped. We never had another flea with pets coming and passing to the rainbow bridge, for over twenty years.

Well this year, 2014, I don't know WHAT is going on. Astrid and Bodhi are IN the house or IN the yard. All of a sudden we have fleas, horrible, hopping, little beasts of torture. It just makes me feel GROSS....

I did a little Google research on this region of the country and apparently the dry, warm, drought weather has been the absolute perfect breeding ground for an over abundance of fleas. They are taking over local counties by storm... There are forums of people complaining and begging for cures...

So being the semi-crunchy-granola want to use only natural remedy type of person I'm on the hunt for something that works... I'll keep you posted!
Yet another fee/tax to pay the government... However, for the small amount it costs, it's actually worth it.

That tag is an ID for your dog, if your dog ever gets lost, they can look him or her up in the database and know where to find their home. Which could save their LIFE! A lost dog without ID has a very short time to live at the county, with so many dogs coming in, being abandoned, being dropped off, etc.. the rate of dogs being euthanize is saddening.

Side note, even if they get brought in and they are not wearing their collar, they can still look up the dog by BREED and have a good chance of finding you - just do it, your Boxer is your fur baby :)

In our neck of the woods the fee is only $20/year (for a spayed/neutered) dog - so $40 for the both of them...

I just went down to the County and paid in person, I simply had to have the paper from the vet proving they had been vaccinated, proof that they were spayed/neutered, and payment. Voila, new jewelry for their collars!

Bodhi goes bat s#*t crazy when you get out the leash, and even MORE nutso excited when you say the words "car ride". So he was quite ecstatic to hop in the car for a trip! I love driving with one (or both) of the Boxers in the car as they love to peek out the windows (while smearing drool and dog snot all over them). The smiles and giggles from passing cars makes me happy! (basically because it makes me know I'm not the only Boxer hooman who grins like a fool when I see a Boxer in someone else's car, lol....)

Even though Bodhi LOVES the idea of going on car rides, he gets major anxiety while IN the car. He won't sit down and relax, he's all tense and hyper focused... silly boy...

Anyways, Bodhi was excited to get to the vet. More people to tell him how cute he is and marvel at his huge Boxer stature. He got his check-up all is good, he weighs 94.7 # now! Looking great!

It cost $99.50 in Northern California for an Exam and his DHP-P + Rabies. They want to do surgery to remove the lumps, Bodhi's treatment plan was less than Astrid's with a quote of $747.50. Dogs are expensive folks, don't get dogs if you cannot care for them (hugs).

I still need to get the Boxer Duo licensed... I had to wait until Bodhi got his shots so I could complete the process... Next, licenses and figuring out when to get the Boxers all taken care of. They did offer 10% off if I brought both in at the same time! (gulp)
Up in Nevada it seemed like Bodhi was always at the vet with his foot issues... I admit, I had not taken either of the Boxers to the vet since we have been back in California. So I finally made an appointment . Astrid's breath could knock over a horse so I took a peek in her mouth and her teeth were bad. I was mortified, I had no idea... I've never had a dog who had teeth issues.

I felt SO guilty :(

She was very excited to go on a car ride, Bodhi was rather miffed that he was not involved in this process and did not like the idea that he was being left at home. He adores Astrid (and his humans) so much the he's rather uncomfortable when there is no one around....

Astrid LOVES people she was going bonkers with all the new humans to greet! She weighs 60.9 pounds, just about right! She got her exam, her DHP-P and her Rabies shots; in Northern California this cost $106.50... has to be done!

In addition to the visit they provided me with a 'treatment plan', basically a quote for Astrid's teeth cleaning and surgery to remove her lumps and bumps. $1053.00 for the blood panel, mass removal, biopsy, injections, boarding, teeth cleaning, teeth extraction, surgical pack and sutures. Bodhi gets his vet visit before we figure out what to with Astrid and her treatment plan!

They also gave me the paperwork to get the dogs licensed, as apparently I have forgotten to do this! (oops) Better hop on that!

My past dog duo Bear and Bearly (Mastiff and Pibble-Mix) were deathly afraid of the vacuum... they would run away, tail between legs and jump as high as possible. On the couch, on the bed, they'd have hung upside down from the ceiling if possible.

On the flip side there are those dogs whom feel the vacuum is a predator, and do everything within their power to destroy it. Attack, bark, chase, pounce, and beyond...

Astrid the Boxer Dog, on the other paw, could not give a care less... She will lay there in the middle of the floor, lifting her head barely for only a brief moment to acknowledge the presence of the snooze-disturbing-sucking-motor with a slightly dirty look. Then, she resumes slumber, in the middle of the floor, while I vacuum around her. Literally, I vacuum around her. Seriously, I can come so close that I can bump her with the vacuum, and she will not move...

That is, until, I'm done with that room. She seems to be conscious of my route through the house, and I swear she does this intentionally... You see, when I'm finished with the living room, she gets up, and lays in the middle of the dining room, I vacuum around her. When I'm finished with the dining room, she gets up, and lays in the middle of the family room, I vacuum around her. So on, and so forth, through the entire house!

When I'm done with the last room I have to go back through the house to vacuum all the Boxer Dog shaped "dogagons" left in each room that I was unable to get due to her nomadic slumbering...

Yes I know I could tell her to get her fuzzy butt out of the way, but in all reality I'd rather her be brave and not care, then develop a fear of the vacuum by me making her move every time...

On a side note, Bodhi the Boxer Dog, pretends to be brave... He will lay on the floor, with shifty eyes, watching every move of the evil vacuum. He will tolerate the impending doom machine for as long as dog-ly possible - then he escapes to the couch or bed and stays put until the vacuum is back in the cabinet...

He's so cute, I admit, it's hard to make him move so I fit... Often I fit myself in around him so I don't disturb his peaceful slumber... He always uses my teddy bear as a pillow :)

Often I wake up with about 12 inches of space along the edge, one move and I'm on the floor, while Astrid and Bodii are sprawled out all nice and comfy!

I tell them how lucky they are, and about all the sad little doggies that have to sleep on the concrete...

Or the wild foxes and wolves that sleep in caves on dirt and rocks. They just look at me like I'm crazy... (well am trying to reason with 2 Boxers, but still....)

Then I sit there and ponder if the Boxer Duo think how nice they are to share their bed with us and that we're hogging their space...
